Bringing Stories to the Street

COWICHAN INTERCULTURAL SOCIETY
PROUDLY LAUNCHES ITS NEW PROJECT

Cowichan Intercultural Society presents Bringing Stories to the Street

This project will build on the achievements and momentum of “Activating Our Stories – Creating Our Home,” a project which incorporated the Arts and Dialogue to create exciting, contemplative, mind-altering projects in 11 communities of the Cowichan Region.

"BRINGING STORIES TO THE STREET"
will create two-way communication between business and newcomers.

Businesses will have the opportunity to meet and mentor immigrant newcomers, increase cultural competency, develop arts-based multicultural funded events that will engage the public, and benefit from increased visibility in the community.

Immigrants will grow to understand business services in the community, receive hands-on leadership opportunities, and be encouraged to share their experiences, perspectives, and knowledge with the business and immigrant communities.

Both businesses and immigrants will benefit from free training and will build capacity to become leaders in diversity in the Cowichan Region.

If you would like to learn more about how to participate in “Bringing Stories to the Street,” please contact Jackie Martin (jmartin.cis@telus.net) or Francoise Moulin (francoise.cis@telus.net)

Shawnigan Scarecrow Trail

Bringing Stories To the Street

Through Business, Community and Culture

Through the Cowichan Intercultural Society, both the Village Chippery and Family Integrity Corporation have been given an exciting opportunity to combine their efforts with Dewar McCarthy, Shawnigan Lake Newcomer to celebrate his South African culture with all of Shawnigan.

Here is what we can do together:

  • Create a Scarecrow Trail.  Businesses can build a scarecrow reflecting their business, culture and/or creativity.  They will be displayed throughout Shawnigan as an attraction for everyone to enjoy from May 12 – May 26.  A map will be available with the locations of the scarecrows and people will be able to vote on their favourite.  The winner will receive cash to present to the charity of their choice.

  • May 12 (Saturday) from 11 – 2  “The Launch Party” at Dewar's business (Dewar McCarthy  Accountants, 2769 Shawnigan Lake Road) featuring a South African Market, Music, Food & Drink, crafts and a whole lotta fun.

  • May 26 (Saturday) from 12 – 4  “The Awards Ceremony” at the Village Chippery (2740 Dundas Road, the Purple Building). The favourite scarecrow winner will be announced and prizes awarded.  This is also the Triathlon weekend and the village will be abuzz with activities, vendors and entertainment.

This is a chance to SCARE up business that everyone will CROW about.

COST TO BUSINESSES:  Your $10  registration includes a  scarecrow frame.
